New to eBikes - where to start?

Subject: New to eBikes - where to start? (Total newbie questions inside!)

Hey everyone!

Just joined the forum as I'm seriously considering getting into eBiking, but honestly, I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the options out there. I'm hoping to use one for a 10-15 mile commute mostly on paved roads, but also for some weekend leisure rides on light trails. My main question is: what are the absolute must-knows for a beginner, especially regarding motor types (hub vs. mid-drive) and battery range? Any advice on where to even begin looking would be super helpful!

Cheers, eBikeCurious_87

Welcome to the eBike world, eBikeCurious_87! For your commute and light trails, a mid-drive motor is often preferred for its better hill climbing and more natural bike feel, though hub drives are great for flat commutes and can be more budget-friendly. Battery range depends heavily on terrain and assist level, but for 10-15 miles plus leisure, look for at least a 400-500Wh battery to give you plenty of buffer. Definitely try to test ride both motor types if you can!

Welcome to the eBike world! For your commute and light trails, a mid-drive motor is generally preferred for its natural feel and better hill climbing, though a hub motor can be great for flat commutes and is often more budget-friendly. Battery range really depends on the Wh rating and how much assist you use; for 10-15 miles, most modern batteries will easily cover it, but aim for at least 400-500Wh for comfortable leisure rides and peace of mind. Start by visiting a local eBike shop to test ride different motor types and see what feels best for you!
